Excerpt Reveal - Sleeper by Lexi Blake

When Neil’s past catches up to him, Kelsey must choose between her new family and an old love…

With tensions rising between the Council and demonkind, Kelsey finds herself investigating a series of murders that threaten the fragile truce between them. If she can’t stop these killings soon, they could ignite a fire sure to burn the supernatural world down.

Unfortunately for her, Kelsey’s problems don’t stop with a pile of dead halflings. Her connection with Marcus is frayed at best, and Gray hasn’t been heard from in months. Her only semblance of peace comes from a new man in her life. When Gray storms back into the picture, her love life goes from incredibly complicated to apocalyptic.

Just as Kelsey begins to unravel the mystery, the forces of Heaven decide to take an interest in her actions. Outclassed with these powers in play, Kelsey knows that one misstep could leave the human and supernatural worlds in ashes.

“Your Highness, please back away. In fact, it would be best if you left the room altogether.” Felix put himself between me and Roberts. “Kelsey, I need you to push her down. Push her back down for a few moments. Marcus will be back soon and he’s going to take care of you. Being around those angels unsettled you. I don’t know if you noticed, but at the end of the meeting, your ward fell off. You didn’t have it on when Oliver shook your hand. He’s unbalanced and now you are, too. It’s like a contagion for someone like you. Oliver’s illness has called up your inner wolf and she’s angry.”
“Perhaps if I touch her,” Henri began. “I’m an academic. I don’t have the same connection she has with Marcus, but I might be able to help.”
“I’m not unbalanced.” It didn’t matter that my hands were shaking and they had been ever since I’d left the angels behind. “I’m going to talk to the wolf whether you like it or not. He’s been handling silver. It’s the only reason his hands wouldn’t have healed. Even then, a couple of hours would have done it. Unless the freaking silver he held came straight from Heaven. What about it, Roberts? How did you spend last night?”
The wolf was shaking his head. “I don’t know.”
That wasn’t an answer I was willing to accept. I was about to explain that to everyone when Chad stepped up and got in my face.
“I’m taking him out of here now,” Chad explained. “You’ll let me or we’re going to have trouble.”
I was ready for trouble. I was fairly sure I grinned, the idea of fighting a vamp lifting my spirits high. For the first time in what felt like hours, I went still. “You’re not going anywhere.”
Chad turned, his shoulders squaring, and I felt the world begin to bend around me. Chad belongs to one of the rarest classes of vampire—the magicians. As far as I knew, he was the only one walking the night at this time. He could form illusions so real you could taste food, feel imaginary rain on your skin, utterly believe whatever he wanted you to believe. I’d come up against him before. I might be one of the only people in the world who could see through him.
“It won’t work,” I said calmly as reality seemed to go dark and I heard the hissing of snakes all around me. “Do you not remember what happened the last time you pulled this shit on me? It took three tranqs to take me down. I don’t think you have those on you today.”
“I won’t need them.” Chad lifted his hand and the world shifted.
“Holy shit,” Casey said, climbing up on his desk. “What the fuck is happening?”
Snakes were happening. They were crawling from the woodwork, twitching and hissing my way. The fibers of the carpet beneath my feet lengthened and formed more snakes until they were a menacing mass, threatening everyone in the room.
Well, except for Chad, who had lifted his husband into his arms and prepared to take him away.
I let my wolf loose a bit. She knew this was all an illusion. That primitive part of my brain that Chad was accessing, the lizard brain that merely wanted to survive, was taken over by the wolf inside me. The alpha wolf didn’t want mere survival. She wanted to dominate, and that meant seeing past fear, trusting her instincts over what her eyes perceived.
The minute I opened the door, I felt her surge through me.
“I’m not letting you go. I can’t. I’m conducting a murder investigation, and I believe your boy here just became my prime suspect.” My hands twitched, eager for a fight, and I realized how long it had been since Marcus and I had thrown down.
Too long. Remember that whole thing about needing sex or violence to feed my inner wolf? Well, she was hungry and there was a whole lot of violence in Chad’s eyes.
I welcomed it. I could feel the need rise like a wave threatening to engulf me. This was why I had a trainer in the first place.
I gritted my teeth because Chad turned on his power. I could feel those fucking snakes climbing my legs and sinking their fangs into me. I refused to pay any attention to them despite the fact that I ached to rip the fuckers off me and toss them aside. To do that would have given the magician more power. If I bought into it, if I took my eyes off the only thing in the room that was real, I would end up like Casey, who was screaming like a girl.
“Let me pass, Hunter,” Chad said.
I stood my ground like the good Gandalf I was. Except I kind of wanted to shove my nonexistent staff right up old Chad’s ass, and then we would see if he sent snakes my way again.
The anger rose, rapid and quick, a flash fire coursing through me. I didn’t even realize when I had reached for the fireplace poker. All I knew was it was suddenly in my hands and I was going to use it. I could see myself shoving that piece of wrought iron right through his heart. It wouldn’t kill him. I would need wood for that, but then again, I didn’t want the fight over so quickly.
I raised the poker, ready to start.
“Stop it, both of you.” Donovan stepped in between us, but I didn’t care at that moment. I hadn’t felt this way in forever, not since Marcus had taken me in. I hadn’t been so out of control that I didn’t care who I hurt as long as I got to hurt someone. I would fuck up Donovan, too. All that mattered was seeing blood, feeling bones crush.
“You see, I told you she’s far gone and I can’t fix her anymore. I’ve called Gray and he has an idea of what to do,” Marcus was saying.
    I wasn’t listening.
I started to bring the poker down Donovan’s way, but I was stopped in mid swing. A hand held my wrist, an arm going around my middle and hauling me back against muscled flesh.
“Stop it,” Trent growled in my ear. “You stand down right this second.”

Excerpt 1 (Racy)

After stuffing my fat face and snuggling in between two hot guys after seeing Coldplay… I slept like a baby. The sun starts to peak in through a crack in the curtains and shine right into my eyes. I roll over and try to go back to sleep, not even opening my eyes, but then I feel it… there is a dick, pressing against my ass. I try to ignore it and roll back over in the other direction, but the sun damn near blinds me through my eyelids. And then there is another dick… pressing against my ass.
“Who is awake?” I ask, still without opening my eyes. All I want to do is go back to sleep for another hour, and instead I’m in the middle of a morning wood sword fight.
“Me,” both of the guys say at the same time. I let out a sigh.
“Who wants to let me sleep for another hour?” I say, and of course the silence is deafening. They are like children waiting to jump out of bed on Christmas morning.
“We do have to get on the road by noon if we don’t want to hit nasty traffic,” Liam adds.
“So, no more sleep?” I say, slowly blinking my eyes open to find them both staring at me.
“Nope,” They both say at the same time. Welp, I guess I am getting up!
“Can I at least brush my teeth first?” I ask in a whiny tone.
“Hurry up,” Liam says, and I take my time getting out of the bed and climbing over Hunter to make my way to the bathroom.
“Gosh, you’re a brat,” Hunter chimes in. He’s right, I just can’t help it. Maybe it’s my stubborn nature but when someone tells me to do something I usually do the opposite. I’m pretty sure that’s in my DNA. I stop dragging my feet, and pee as quick as I can, before taking my time brushing my teeth. Three minutes at the least, dental health is important. I roll my eyes in the mirror at my silly obsession with teeth. I also may be petrified of the dentist.
I wipe my mouth with a towel and stare at myself in the mirror wondering what waits for me on the other side of that door. I feel completely overwhelmed. I close my eyes and reassure myself that everything is going to be okay. This is what we all want. This is something we’ve talked about for almost a month. These two men adore me, they worship the ground that I walk on…there is nothing to be scared of. I hope.
“Ready for me?” I say, peeking out of the bathroom and seeing the two men still in the same place I left them a few minutes ago. Both men instantly look in my direction, as I slowly walk towards the bed. Step by step I kick off another piece of clothing. First my sweatpants, then my t-shirt leaving me completely naked in front of the two of them.

Excerpt

In the time it took to throw a baseball or swing a bat, everything I’d worked so hard for as long as I could remember was gone. If I could have snapped my fingers to reiterate the point to myself, I would have. But I couldn’t. Because my fucking shoulder was destroyed, and I couldn’t move my arm.
“Hey, Frank.”
My girlfriend’s voice cut through my pity party, and I turned my head to meet her eyes. My relationship with Shelby was brand new, we’d only recently started dating, and I was certain it was about to end as quickly as it had begun. I expected to find her looking either as sad or as devastated as I was, but she wasn’t. She seemed calm, a small smile tugging at her lips. She was a sweet girl, someone I could fall in love with someday. Well, as much as I could fall in love with anything other than baseball. But there was no baseball for me anymore. What the hell was I going to do with my life? I had no backup plan because there was never a reason to. Getting hurt had never crossed my mind . . . all I’d been able to think about was going pro. Until now.
“How long have you been here?” I tried not to sound like a dick, but my thoughts were focused on life-changing questions like, What am I going to do now? Who am I going to be?
Shelby shrugged, and her long brown hair fell over her shoulder.
“You don’t have to stay,” I grumbled. “I know you have classes.” She pulled her chair closer to my bed.
“I’ve already talked to my professors. I’m going to stay, if that’s okay.”
“Are you sure? You realize my career’s over, right?” I practically barked at her. “You sure you want to hang out with a has-been?” It was irrational and mean, but I was mad and she was the only one in the room with me, so I directed my frustration at her. She stiffened a little before relaxing, reaching out to rest a hand on my left arm.
“I’m sure. I won’t pretend to know how you’re feeling right now, Frank. I can only imagine how hard this is for you and how sad you must be, but I never liked you because you were a baseball player.” “No? That had nothing to do with it?” Too late, I realized that now I totally sounded like a complete dick.
Shelby narrowed her eyes for a second before letting out a soft sigh. “I like your dedication and work ethic. But that’s a part of your character and it has nothing to do with baseball. I love the person you are, not the person you thought you were going to become. I don’t care if you’re a baseball player or a plumber as long as you’re happy.”
I reached for her hand and squeezed it with my good one because I knew she meant the things she was telling me. Even though I was pissed off about everything I’d just lost, I still had one very important thing. And she was sitting right next to me, refusing to give up on me. I never knew how much I needed that kind of acceptance until Shelby sat there patiently, giving it to me willingly, no matter how frustrated I was. Over the next few weeks, even my former teammates disappeared. They still had the game, their dreams within reach, and seeing me only reminded them of how easily it could all be stolen away. They stopped asking if I was okay, how I was feeling, and finally, they stopped coming around altogether. That was another blow to my ego, watching them drift away one by one. Guys I’d thought were like brothers just walked away as if I’d never mattered. But not Shelby. She never left my side. When I finally declared a new major and switched my focus to business management and finance, hanging up my cleats for good, she encouraged me and told me I’d be great at it. All the days when I didn’t believe in myself, she believed in me enough for the two of us. I don’t think I would have gotten through that time in my life without her. Funny how things can change.

About the Author

I got fired from my last job.  It's true.  I know you're sitting there thinking, "Jenn, how could anyone in their right mind fire someone like you?" And I'd love to give you a good reason, but the truth is that sometimes being all sorts of awesome isn't fun for other people. They don't always tend to like it. lol  So I picked my pride off the floor, bought a laptop and started writing my first book. And you know what I realized? Writing stories that meant something to me was a million times better than working my ass off for someone who didn't really care about anything other than the bottom line.  My soul has never felt more satisfied.  My heart has never been more full. I've never worked so hard in my life, but I love every second of it. I truly do. It is SO worth it.  All of it.  Every moment. The journey it took to get to this point- I wouldn't change a thing.

If you are looking for a book with all the feels...you have found it!! I was sad, happy, heartbroken, and then happy again. Dawn has definitely hit it out of the park with this one.
**Jackie**

When you read a book and can relate to the heroine's feelings, making the story so personal it feels as if you know her.... THAT is what reading is all about for me.
**Jennifer**

It is a romance for the ages and will be a reread of mine for years to come. There is nothing better than living all the emotions of the characters within the pages of an epic story.
**Stefanie**

This was my favorite Dawn Robertson book I've read so far.
**R. Kennedy**

You will laugh, cry, swoon, most of all you will FEEL.
**Trina**

It's not your typical romance novel and that's exactly what I love about it. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who may be stuck in a "romance genre" funk.
